The Skinny on Lean Beef Cuts

In case you missed it, the BEEF Loving Texans are in the midst of the Protein Challenge, an ongoing effort to build ourselves up to eating the daily recommended amount of protein. The reasons for completing this challenge are plentiful. In addition to supporting lower cholesterol and heart health, higher-protein diets are more likely to leave you feeling satisfied, which can help prevent over-eating throughout the day.

As people who are constantly on-the-go with work, family, friends and fitness, feeling fulfilled is essential to successfully going about our day. Which is exactly why we’re so crazy about lean beef. Just ONE serving of lean beef contains more than 50% of your daily recommended value of protein. That portion equates to about the size of your cell phone!

But what qualifies as lean beef? We hear the term thrown around a lot, yet there seems to be a lot of confusion as to what it actually means. In technical terms, lean beef is any cut of beef containing less than 4.5 grams of saturated fat and 10 grams of total fat. But, more realistically, it’s what’s found in many of your favorite beef cuts!

Tenderloin, T-Bone, Top Sirloin, Tri-Tip, Flat-Half Brisket – yep, all lean. And the list doesn’t stop there – check out the chart below or visit the Interactive Butcher Counter for the full lean beef breakdown. You may be surprised to learn how many lean beef cuts you’re already consuming in your day-to-day diet!

So, next time you’re at the grocery store, load up the cart with a few of your protein-filled lean beef favorites. Your body (and tastebuds) will thank you!
