Ryan Moorhouse – Dalhart, Texas
Ryan Moorhouse
This month’s featured beef producer is Ryan Moorhouse from Dalhart, a small city in the upper panhandle of Texas. Moorhouse is very active within the agricultural community, not just as the general manager for a large cattle-feeding facility (73k head) located in Hartley, Texas but also as the owner/operator of his own ranch in Benjamin, Texas. In addition, he’s held past and present leadership positions in numerous agricultural organizations.
Moorhouse’s personal ranch in Benjamin, founded in 1950, is a family affair, actually leased from his father who worked it for years and still owns it. Moorhouse’s wife of 20 years, Colette, keeps the books, his oldest son Caxton helps out tremendously with various ranch duties, and younger son Case is learning the ropes – these boys represent the 4th generation of ranching in the family.
“Taking care of cattle in all conditions and getting the job done right so that the cattle stay healthy and thrive throughout their time with us one the most rewarding aspect of the job,” says Moorhouse, who holds a degree in Agricultural Business from Texas A&M. He also mentions that others in the industry also make his job a “joy and pleasure” as does getting to consume the plenty of the product. Despite all these rewards, he adds, “The beef business isn’t for the feint of heart.”
