Ground Beef versus Ground Turkey. Do you know who the nutritional winner is? I was pretty flipping excited to see the outcome of this nutrition label showdown!
How many times have friends, family, and even I picked up a package of ground turkey thinking it was the healthier choice? Probably a lot of times. But, I bet there is little excitement about putting a package of ground turkey in the shopping cart instead of ground beef.
We hear and read it everywhere – if we want to eat healthier, we should replace ground beef with ground turkey. It’s almost engrained into our minds. But, have you ever stopped to read the labels to determine which is really healthier and more nutritious?
Before we analyze the labels, there are probably a few things we all know without looking at the nutritionals: Obviously this list is my opinion and my opinion only.
- Ground turkey is dry.
- Ground turkey is boring.
- Ground turkey doesn’t look very appetizing.
- Ground turkey definitely doesn’t taste as delicious as Ground Beef.
The labels below compare 93% lean ground beef to 93% lean ground turkey. As you’ll see, ground beef has less calories, less total fat, less cholesterol, and more Protein, Iron, Zinc, Vitamin B12 and Selenium. AND FLAVOR!!!
And, remember, if you want to save a few dollars and buy the 80/20 ground beef, but would still like less fat and fewer calories, read my post on making ground beef leaner.

Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed Ground Beef. Color is not a reliable indicator of Ground Beef doneness. Use a meat thermometer for precise internal temperature.
