What will I receive if I am selected as the Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher in Texas?
In addition to publicity (and bragging rights), each finalist (one winner from each regional semifinal competition) will receive a cash prize of $2,500 and an invitation to compete for the title of Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher in Texas. The final round of competition will be held at the Austin Food + Wine Festival on April 29, 2017. The winner of the Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher in Texas competition will receive a cash prize of $5,000, and one full-page co-branded ad in Texas Monthly announcing his/her win. Am I required to have any formal certifications in order to participate?
No formal certifications are required to enter the competition, though we highly recommend completing a Food Handler’s Certification course. Click here for more information.
How much does it cost to participate?
Participation in the Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher in Texas competition is free, and tools and equipment will be provided, including Victorinox Swiss Army boning knives, a breaking knife, a cut resistant glove, a steel and a knife roll, to ensure everyone starts on an even playing field. Participants will be responsible for their own travel, lodging and incidental expenses during the regional semifinal and final rounds of the competition.
Who will be judging the competition?
During the regional semifinal and final rounds, you’ll be graded by a variety of qualified judges, including meat science professionals from major Texas universities, seasoned butchers from the retail and foodservice industries, as well as local food journalists.
What skills will I be tested on as part of the judging criteria?
You will be tested on beef cut identification, cutting for retail merchandising/display, cutting made-to-order for foodservice, general butcher knowledge and consumer interaction.
Who will I be competing against?
While individual entries are confidential, you’ll be competing against some of the state’s top retail and food service butchers from restaurants and meat markets across Texas.
What tools or equipment will I need to participate?
Nothing. All equipment will be provided including Victorinox Swiss Army boning knives, a breaking knife, a cut resistant glove, a steel and a knife roll, to ensure everyone starts on an even playing field.
When will I be notified if I qualify for the regional semifinal competition?
Those who qualify for the regional semifinal competition will be notified by February 17.
Where and when will the regional semifinal and final rounds of the Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher in Texas competition take place?
The contest will be open for submissions through February 12. Semifinalists will be notified by February 17, and will compete in their respective regional semifinal competitions. Regional semifinal and final rounds will take place as follows:
- Houston: Saturday, March 4
- Dallas: Saturday, March 18
- San Antonio: Saturday, April 1
- Austin Food + Wine Festival: Saturday, April 29
Semifinalists will be notified of the competition venues when they receive confirmation that they have been selected as semifinalists.

If I have a conflict that interferes with my designated regional semifinal city, am I able to participate at one of the other regional semifinal competitions?
We’re happy to accommodate extenuating circumstances, when possible. If you know of an existing conflict, please indicate in the Comments section of the Entry Form.
All finalists (winners of each regional semifinal round) will receive a $2,500 cash prize. Each finalist will also secure a spot on the Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher Council. The Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher Council will represent Texas Beef Council as industry influencers/experts on all things beef at events and publicity opportunities.
The Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher in Texas will win an additional cash prize of $5,000 and their own standalone co-branded Beef Loving Texans ad in Texas Monthly.
Each regional semifinalist will also go home with Beef Loving Texans items and their own Victorinox Swiss Army boning knives, a breaking knife, a cut resistant glove, a steel and a knife roll.
Beef Loving Texans’ Best Butcher in Texas Rules for Contest Participants
The rules for the contest are pretty simple. You’ll be assigned to compete in a city for the regional semifinal round based on the map below; please let us know up front if there are any issues with the date or location of your regional semifinal round.
Other than that, do your best work, be responsible for your cutlery and tools, and exhibit professional and courteous behavior. Don’t steal from other competitors, or try to sway the judges’ opinions through unethical means. Maintain a clean work station and wear gloves throughout the competition.
